Nobody has time for blog posts during the school year, but I wanted to at least plant the seed of this one. Just as with funny names, I like to collect linguistics lingo that stands out to non-linguists as jargon/weird/confusing/marked(!). In reality, a lot of these terms aren't unique to linguistics (see the Academese section below), or aren't particularly useful to describe non-linguistics things. But some are gold! Thus, this list.
Note: I know many others have independently innovated the same "listing ling jargon" concept, so if you are aware of other such collections, please let me know so I can link them here! (I'm pretty sure the linggo coinage is a Grade A-manda original though (alas?)).
Useful linggo
- dispreferred
- unmarked
- harmonically bounded
- optimal candidate
- elsewhere case
- salient
- index (v)
- borne out
- falls out
- complementary distribution (thanks to Coco L)
- felicitious
Annoying linggo
(aka things I read (or wrote) in papers and said `ugh' about)- adduced
- cash out (v)
Not necessarily linggo, but some sort of Academese
- orthogonal
- modulo
- marginal
- (ante)*penultimate
If you have complaints about my sorting, good! Isn't it nice to complain about frivolous things? You're welcome.
